Migration

Migrate from Panopto to host.video

Move your video library without the $7,500/year minimum

Why Teams Are Switching

$7,500/year minimum with no self-serve option

Panopto requires annual contracts starting at $7,500/year. There is no free tier, no free trial, and no monthly plan. You cannot even test the product without talking to sales.

Dated, buggy interface

The editing experience is described as "a barely extant piece of incomplete software." Processing can take over an hour. There is no way to revert editing mistakes. The UI is "beyond confusing," and embedded videos frequently appear locked, generating daily access-request emails.

Hollowed out by private equity

K1 Investment Management acquired Panopto and has been cutting costs aggressively. Employee reviews describe a wrecked culture, ongoing layoffs, and added debt. The company is "consistently failing to meet financial goals."

What You'll Gain

Self-serve signup, no sales calls

Before: annual contracts and mandatory sales conversations. After: sign up, upload, and go live in minutes with a free trial. Transparent pricing, no sales calls.

Modern, fast interface

Before: hour-long processing times and a confusing UI. After: videos ready to play in minutes with a clean, intuitive dashboard.

Searchable video library

Before: Panopto's search that works inconsistently. After: auto-transcription with full-text search across every video in your library.

Step-by-Step Migration

Step 1: Export from Panopto

In Panopto, navigate to your video library, select videos, and use the "Download" option to get source files (MP4). For large libraries, contact your Panopto admin to request a bulk export — Panopto does not have a public API for self-serve bulk downloads.

Step 2: Create your host.video account

Sign up for a free 14-day trial. No sales call needed. Configure your workspace and custom domain.

Step 3: Upload your library

Upload your exported MP4 files via drag-and-drop, or stage them in Google Drive, Dropbox, or S3 and import from there. Resumable uploads handle large training recordings without issues.

Step 4: Update your embeds and LMS links

Replace Panopto embed codes in your LMS, wiki, or intranet with host.video embed snippets. If you use an LMS like Canvas or Moodle, update the embedded iframe URLs in your course content.

Step 5: Verify and go live

Test playback in your LMS and intranet, confirm auto-generated transcriptions and chapters, and verify access controls. Cancel your Panopto contract once migration is complete.

What About My Embed Links?

Panopto embeds reference your organization's Panopto-hosted domain (e.g., yourorg.hosted.panopto.com). These links will break when your Panopto contract ends. Replace all Panopto embeds in your LMS and internal sites with host.video embeds before your renewal date. For organizations with thousands of embedded videos in course content, consider a phased rollout starting with active courses.

FAQ

How long does it take?

Depends on library size. A training library of 200 videos can be migrated in a day. The main bottleneck is exporting from Panopto, which may require admin assistance for bulk downloads.

Will I lose my analytics?

Export Panopto viewing reports before your contract ends. host.video analytics begin tracking immediately for all new embeds.

Can I keep completion tracking for compliance training?

host.video tracks per-viewer engagement. For formal LMS completion tracking, embed host.video in your LMS and use the LMS's own completion criteria based on the embed interaction.
