Migration

Migrate from Brightcove to host.video

Move your entire video library in under a day

Why Teams Are Switching

Gutted by acquisition

Bending Spoons acquired Brightcove for $233M in February 2025 and laid off 85% of the staff — 450 of 530 employees. Only a skeleton crew of roughly 80 remains. The same company also owns Vimeo, and is applying the same cost-cutting playbook to both.

Opaque pricing and annual lock-in

Brightcove does not publish pricing. Estimated starting cost is $199/month with mandatory annual contracts. Setup can cost $10,000 or more. Post-acquisition, customers report unclear billing and pressure to migrate to more expensive product bundles.

Support has deteriorated

Post-acquisition support underwent a complete overhaul and has worsened. No single point of contact. Named customers like Revry and AFI are already leaving the platform.

What You'll Gain

Transparent, self-serve pricing

Before: sales calls, annual contracts, and opaque invoices. After: published pricing, monthly billing, cancel anytime.

Modern, maintained platform

Before: a product described by analysts as "effectively frozen" in development. After: an actively developed platform with regular feature releases.

No vendor risk from acquisition

Before: uncertainty about the platform's future under Bending Spoons. After: a focused, independent video hosting platform.

Step-by-Step Migration

Step 1: Export from Brightcove

Use the Brightcove CMS API to batch-export your video assets and metadata. Brightcove does not offer a one-click export — you will need to download source files via the API or through the Video Cloud Studio download option on each video.

Step 2: Create your host.video account

Sign up for a free 14-day trial. Configure your organization, custom domain, and player branding.

Step 3: Upload your library

Upload exported files via the dashboard, or use the S3 import if you staged files in a bucket. Resumable TUS uploads handle enterprise-sized libraries reliably.

Step 4: Update your embeds

Replace Brightcove player embeds with host.video embed codes. Search your codebase for "players.brightcove.net" or the Brightcove player JavaScript loader and swap in the host.video iframe.

Step 5: Verify and go live

Test all embed locations, verify HLS playback and auto-generated transcriptions, and confirm your custom domain is active. Notify your team that the migration is complete and cancel your Brightcove contract.

What About My Embed Links?

Brightcove embeds reference a player hosted on players.brightcove.net with your account and player IDs. These will stop working when your Brightcove contract ends. Plan your migration before your renewal date. Replace all Brightcove embed codes on your site with host.video embeds while your Brightcove account is still active so you can verify side-by-side.

FAQ

How long does it take?

For enterprise libraries with hundreds of videos, allow a full day. The API-based export and upload run in parallel. Embed replacement depends on how many pages reference Brightcove players.

Will I lose my analytics?

Export your Brightcove analytics reports before your contract ends. host.video analytics begin tracking from the moment your new embeds are live.

Can I keep my DRM settings?

host.video supports domain locking, signed URLs, and password protection. If you relied on Brightcove's studio-grade DRM for premium content, discuss your specific requirements during your trial.

What happens to my Brightcove apps and integrations?

Brightcove-specific integrations (Beacon, Gallery) will not carry over. host.video provides embed codes, an API, and webhook support. Evaluate your integration needs during the trial period.
